MENTAWAI
JOURNAL
This section consists of a number of short,
textual, snapshots focusing upon incidents recorded by the author, Glenn
Reeves, during a period of extended residence on the island of Siberut during the early 1990s
and a brief period in the latter half of 2000, which also included a visit to
Sipora. They are intended to give the reader a feel for the texture of daily
life as well as providing insight into some of the areas and issues of
concern to the local people. This is also the stated intent of the articles
in "Ethnographic Particulars". However the textual strategy applied
in this "Journal" section represents
a different means to the same end. It is generally an attempt to draw closer
to the humanity of the local people than was perhaps achieved above. Note
that names have been changed to preserve anonymity as much as possible.

LOCAL
MOVEMENTS TOWARDS AUTONOMY
There are no 'people without history', to
paraphrase a notable commentary on the subject. This section contains example
articles demonstrating the increasing level of social and political activism
on the part of local people on Siberut, Sipora, and the Pagai Islands.
It gives a brief glimpse of the process of history-making currently underway,
an understanding of which is critical to a nuanced appreciation of the place
that local people are carving out for themselves in the modern world. The
articles are drawn, with permission, from early editions of the information
bulletin "Puailiggoubat".

PUAILIGGOUBAT:
Media Informasi dan Pemberdayaan Masyarakat Mentawai
First
published in early 2001 under the auspices of the NGO, Citra Mandiri, the
general mission of this publication is as "cerminan diri kita sebagai
orang Mentawai"/"a reflection of ourselves as indigenous
Mentawaians". As of December 2001 a new expanded tabloid edition is
published monthly and available by subscription from the office of Yayasan
Citra Mandiri. A selection of articles is available below, giving an
indication of the sorts of topics and issues dealt with. An appreciation of
this type of material provides an understanding of important issues as
defined by local people.

SURF
TOURISM
The rapid expansion of surf tourism in the Mentawai Islands in the period 1995-2001 has
subjected them to world scrutiny to a degree probably unmatched in their
history. In this we are possibly seeing the beginning of a new chapter in the
relationship between the region's residents and the rest of the world.
However there is still some way to go before a
clearer picture of the key social, cultural, political and economic
dimensions of this engagement emerges. The following links provide some
initial insight into this phenomenon.
