Menghindari Calon Tikus

By Kortanius Sebeleakek

English Translation

Avoiding Dodgy Candidates

By Kortanius Sabeleakek.

At the beginning of 2002, a handful from the 7,800 Public Service Candidates (PSC) for Mentawai local government have been selected for the first stage of the selection process. We very much hope that these candidates that have made it through truly have the desire to live, mix with, and empower the people of the Mentawai Islands. In short, we hope that these selected candidates have all the qualities required: they have the requisite knowledge to operate as local government officials and are ready to work hard throughout Mentawai where the limitations are still so many.

We also hope that those passing the first stage of the selection and then in the final phase do not pass due to “money games” (hopefully within the selection process no such events transpire) which will have the effect of focusing their thoughts purely on money: they will become rats who will undermine the development of Mentawai.

A good local government administration is the key to the success of future development in Mentawai. And this means hard work And this applies even more to long incumbent civil servants many amongst whom have acquired the mental attitude of “discarded people”. They are busy with their own concerns and neglect their primary duties as civil servants with the result that they adversely affect all many of people. “Mentawai has many problems” is always the key phrase explaining why the administration is neglectful in carrying out its duties.

The formation of its own regional government administration represents a new era for the Mentawai Islands to change its self-image and for all Public Servants to really want to work for the advancement of Mentawai. Just regard Mentawai’s recent past before it had its own regional admin as the New Order, and now Mentawai society is ready to be served by the “Reformation Era” administration. Don’t let it come to pass that the enthusiasm of reform be infiltrated by the spirit and character of the New Order with its characteristics of collusion, corruption, and nepotism.

Mentawai society has already for quite some time yearned for good and transparent service from government administration, which includes teachers. This is because with this sort of service the pace of future development of Mentawai will be quickened and its results visible.
